Thursday

It's the little things...

A magazine once asked me 'what would I save if my house was on fire?' Obviously dogs and children aside, it was this wooden box that came top of the list. Handmade, old and for some reason, my very favorite thing. These special (small) things are what turns a house into a home.  They are the things that 'explain' us and make us content. When people visit, how often do they focus on these precious items - not on the flat screen or the must have cushion of the season?

How lovely is it to have your special things out and sharing space with each other?
Tin Tin is giddy with the fact that he's sharing shelf space with Alain de Botton. Snowy - not so bothered .....

Wednesday

New house - same love

In our new home - our favourite things are still our favourite things - now merged together in a new way that is us and probably still will be in five, ten and twenty years.

My favourite rickety Georgian table that my mother found for me, Ed's guitar he bought in NZ when we started our life together, his parents 1960's lampbase from their years living in Madrid, my green glass vase - the best birthday present from my sister, Ed's art and finally the bowl from a Ugandan potter that my mother and I found last year.

So much love and happiness in just one corner of one room.

We bought three beds and two sofas when we moved here, the rest is the culmination of our lives to this point. I think that's what home should be shouldn't it?

Tuesday

Fabric gifts

Happy is the day when you receive a parcel with a wax stamp on it.

Back with a new thought!

Unplanned absence. 4 days of stripping paneling, 4 days of painting floors, 2 days of stripping and painting the hallway, 8 quilts, 1 class at Charleston, 2 classes at The Papered Parlour, another little job which could be marvellous, Darcy's first ad shoot, a garden hoed, mulched and planted... Our house looks like our home now. Right sofa facing the right way. Quilts everywhere, tool boxes away and happy children.

Wednesday

Small pleasures

Quick coffee break. Freshly made coffee, sun comes out, doors are open, daffodils smiling, dogs are snoring. Made me want to giggle.
